In a life-threatening emergency, call 911

If You Need Immediate Help

If you or a child is in immediate danger, call 911 right away. For non-emergency crisis support, dial 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline: 1-800-422-4453.

If a Child Is in Crisis

Stay calm and keep them close. Call your local child welfare or pediatrician. The National Child Abuse Hotline (1-800-422-4453) and Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741) offer 24/7 support.

If You Need Food or Housing Support

Dial 211 to connect with local food banks, shelter, utility assistance, and emergency housing. SNAP and WIC enrollment can begin online through your state's benefits portal.

If You Need Legal Help

Contact your state's legal aid society or the American Bar Association lawyer referral service. Many family-law attorneys offer free initial consultations for grandparent caregivers.

If You Need Mental Health Support

Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. SAMHSA's National Helpline (1-800-662-4357) is free, confidential, and available 24/7 for emotional and substance-use support.

Important Documents to Gather

Birth certificates, Social Security cards, medical records, school records, court orders, immunization records, ID for the caregiver, and a list of medications and providers. Keep copies in a secure folder.
